If you don’t know the name Ja Morant yet… learn it

November 26, 2018

Ja Morant is a 6 foot 3, 175 pound point guard out of Murray State. So far this season Morant is averaging 24.3 points, 7 rebounds, and 10.3 assists per game. The last game he played in he dropped 29 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists. With those numbers the obvious comparison in the NBA is Russell Westbrook, and you may be thinking, “here we go a kid from a mid D1 school being compared to Russell Westbrook, you must be out of your mind”. But let me tell you, this kid can play. He is explosive to the rim, picks out the right pass and gets the crowd on its feet. Although it may be a small sample size, Morant is shooting 42% from deep compared to his dismal 30% he shot all last season. We’ll have to wait a little longer to see if his shooting has actually improved and not just fluke. With Terry Rozier all but gone after this season and the Celtics having a possible 4 first round draft picks it is entirely possible and plausible to see Morant in a Celtics uniform next year. As of this moment Morant is rated around 14th in the way to early mock drafts, there’s a good possibility that one of those four draft picks end up there. With other guards like Cam Reddish, Quentin Grimes, Romeo Langford and Darius Garland expected to be drafted earlier in the first round the Boston Celtics could land Ja at a relatively reasonable pick. Morant is a perfect fit to play next to guys Kyrie Irving and Marcus Smart. Kyrie prefers to run off picks and spot up, he doesn’t necessarily need the ball in his hands, this is where a point guard like Morant can really fit in, attack and create more opportunities for guys like Kyrie and Tatum. He seems to be at the very least a Terry Rozier type player, and if the Celtics success the past few years has proven to mean anything, that is quite okay for me.

Editors Update: Morant stat line against Alabama, 38 point, 5 assists and 8 rebounds in a 78-72 loss. He shot 55% from the field but went 0-4 from 3. I’ll be continuing blogs about Morant each game so stay tuned.

Update: I was right, Morant was just drafted 2nd in the draft!
